Devils turn over Tigers - Retrieved From Morning Journal News

WELLSVILLE–The Lisbon Blue Devils forced six turnovers en route to spoiling Wellsville’s homecoming 57-27 on Friday night.

The Blue Devils (4-3) opportunistic defense got out to a hot start and took advantage of the single-quarter suspension to Wellsville’s Isaiah Greathouse.

“We knew it was going to be a tough game with Greathouse playing in it,” Lisbon’s Logan Stauffer said. “We knew he was missing the first quarter, so we just wanted to start the game jumping on them. With teams like (Wellsville), when they are down, they’re down, but when they’re high, they’re really high. We wanted to keep them down as much as we could.”

Lisbon forced a fumble on the opening drive of the game for Wellsville, which Logan Stauffer returned 42 yards for Lisbon’s second score of the contest. And after giving up a long touchdown to Wellsville’s Tyrell Watkins, Lisbon cornerback Austin Dailey picked off Gavin Kountz.

“I am very pleased,” Lisbon coach Matt Altomare said. “We challenged our team to try to put four quarters together. We haven’t had a lot of turnovers in the last few weeks, and we caused some turnovers on the defensive side. So we played really well on offense and defense.”

When Greathouse entered the game, he found the end zone on a 1-yard run. But the Blue Devils managed to capitalize on a mistake by the Wellsville standout on his next offensive series. Greathouse dropped the ball when he dropped back to pass after receiving a lateral pass. The last turnover of the half came courtesy of Ryan Carpenter. He ruined a 2-minute drill by the Tigers when he snagged a pass from Gavin Kountz who was hit as he released the ball.

“We can’t turn the ball over five times against a team like (Lisbon) and expect to win the game,” Wellsville coach Moose Ramsey said. “That’s just not acceptable.”

Junior Trevor Siefke did it all for the Blue Devils. He completed 14 passes on 21 attempts for 181 yards and two touchdowns. He also led the Blue Devils in rushing, running eight times for 58 yards and two more touchdowns. He also contributed one of the defense’s four interceptions.

Also scoring for the Blue Devils were Austin Dailey, with a rushing and receiving touchdown, Ashton Hincliffe and Tyler Palmer.

For Wellsville, Gavin Kountz completed five of 12 passes for 108 yards and a touchdown. Greathouse led the Tigers on the ground with eight carries for 50 yards and a touchdown.

Next Friday, Lisbon hosts Leetonia, while Wellsville travels to United.

AnnaBelle Sluder and Kolby Ramsey were named Wellsville’s homecoming queen and king.
